Do I have to live on campus?
Yes, all first year freshman are required to live on campus for one full academic year (please contact the Department of University Residential Living with questions about exceptions for commuting). We believe that the residence life experience will help you make the most of your first year in college. It will allow you to easily integrate into the campus life, as well as introduce you to many new people who will become friends and study partners. He or she may commute from their current residence provided they live with a parent or guardian. A Freshmen Request for Authorization to Commute Form and a letter from the Parent/Guardian needs to be submitted to Residential Living. For more information on the Freshman Residency Agreement, please see Policy #96

Who is in charge of my Residence Hall?
There are a number of people working in the residence halls to assist you while you are away from home. You are considered an adult and will be treated accordingly by all staff. Each student is responsible for his/her own behavior, conduct, and actions.
The Resident Assistant (RA) is an upper-class student who has completed a selection process and intensive training program. The RA is responsible for developing, with the help of the residents, a positive community environment of that floor; providing opportunities for interaction among the residents through programs and activities; being a peer counselor and adviser; and motivating and reporting behavior problems to the Head Resident, Resident Director and Area Coordinator.
The Head Resident (HR) is an upper-class student, paraprofessional who has had previous experience as an RA. The HR is very familiar and trained in understanding student needs, concerns, and issues involving community living. The HR resides in the building where you live and is available during a variety of times throughout the day and evening.
The Area Director (RD) is a full-time professional staff member with a Master's degree, who is responsible for the operational and educational functions of the residence halls. If you have concerns with which the RA and HR have not been able to help you, you are encouraged to seek out the AC by stopping by his/her office, calling or leaving a note.

Can guests visit me in my room?
The vistitation policy allows students to bring friends into their room, but allowing guests of the opposite gender to sleep in your room is prohibited. The only people allowed to live in a room are the people assigned to live their. Visitation hours for for most halls are Sunday-Thrusday, 12 Noon to 12 Midnight, and also Friday and Saturday, 12 noon to 2 a.m. All bathrooms are designate for a single gender. Students and guests are responsible to use the appropriate bathroom designated for their gender. Public facilities are located in the main lobby of each building. Madison, Robertson, Harrill, Reynolds, Walker, Central Drive, Norton, The Village, and Scott Halls have a 24-hour visitation policy that is defined as "the act of visiting" not "cohabitation." During designated hours, anyone wishing to enter a hall must be escorted by a resident of that hall. House phones are located outside the main entrance of each building.
