Lofts may be built by students for their rooms. The following guidelines are intended to assist in the safe construction of sleeping lofts.
- You must supply all building materials and tools.
- The loft shall not restrict free access to doors, all fixtures (lights, heating/cooling units), and windows.
- The top of the mattress must be at least 36" from the ceiling.
- The top of the Loft Structure must be 18" from the ceiling.
- We recommend that all wood be treated with a fire retardant.
- Mechanical fasteners (screws & bolts) shall connect all joints. Nails cannot be used in any stage of construction of the loft.
- Sound construction techniques shall be used including but not limited to: material selection, reinforcement and cross bracing.
- Lofts shall be self-supporting/freestanding and not attached to any part of the room.
- All lofts will be inspected shortly after classes begin. If you have questions prior to inspection please see your Resident Director.
- If your loft does not pass inspection, you will have one (1) week to conform to standards, or disassemble the loft.
- Any loft that is not registerd and inspected will be diassembled.
- It is your responsibility to maintain the loft after inspection. Lofts found to be unsafe must be disassembled.
- Damages to the room or furnishings will result in a charge to your account.
- Lofts left in rooms after check out will result in a charge to your account.
- Lofts should be constructed at home and assembled in your residence hall.
LOFT CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. THE UNIVERSITY AND THE DEPARTMENT OF RESIDENTIAL LIVING ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR DAMAGE TO PERSONAL PROPERTY OR PERSONAL INJURY AS A RESULT OF A LOFTS IN ROOMS.
NO UNIVERSITY FURNITURE MAY BE REMOVED FROM YOUR ROOM.
